What Does Research on Child Prodigies Tell Us About Talent Development and Expertise Acquisition?

چکیده
Research on child prodigies in general and the cognitive-developmental theory of the child prodigy phenomenon in particular shed light on the nature of talent development and expertise acquisition. According to the theory, this phenomenon is a result of an exceptionally accelerated mental development during sensitive periods that leads to the fast growth of a child’s cognitive resources and their construction into specific cognitive experience. This is how human expertise is acquired. The cognitive experience is a psychological basis of extraordinary intellectually creative achievements, which expresses itself in the prodigy’s unique intellectual picture of the world. The psychological nature of the prodigy phenomenon is thus formed by the sensitive periods – which explain prodigious development and talent development – and by cognitive experience, which explains prodigies’ exceptional performance and

O7: Research on the Brain and Learning: Plasticity and Variability and Their Impact on Talent Identification
This talk will introduce the idea that talent development is related to learning where learning is the physiological process of neuro-plastic changes in the brain. To develop talents, individuals must move from novice or beginner’s status to expertise levels of knowledge or skills in a particular domain. Learning depends on maximizing an individual’s potential through the experience...
متن کاملWhat the Savant Syndrome Can Tell Us About the Nature and Nurture of Talent
Recent research has begun to illuminate the composition and development of exceptional skills in those with intellectual disability. I argue that this research is relevant to more general discussions of talent. First, it provides a special opportunity to deconstruct talent in different domains. Because savants typically lack the general intellectual skills usually present in those with more dom...

Second language acquisition research often compares non-native acquirers (L2ers) with other learner populations. Such cross-population comparisons include: (i) child native language (L1) acquisition~child L2 acquisition (e.g. Gavruseva 2000; Weerman et al. 2003); (ii) child L2~adult L2 (e.g. Cancino et al. 1978; McDonald 2000; Montrul 2002; Weerman et al. 2003) and (iii) child L1~adult L2 (Canc...
متن کاملChapter 8 . Using computational modeling in language acquisition research
Language acquisition research is often concerned with questions of what, when, and how – what children know, when they know it, and how they learn it. Theoretical research traditionally yields the what – the knowledge that children attain. For instance, this includes how many vowel phonemes the language has, how the plural is formed, and if the verb comes before or after the object. These and m...
متن کاملThe Natural Rights of Children
What does libertarian theory, Murray Rothbard’s theory in particular, tell us about the rights of children? The two foundational principles of Rothbardian libertarianism are the sanctity of private property and the rule of non-aggression. Persons, including children, are “self-owners”. Yet children, at a young age, are not yet capable of functioning fully as “self-owners.” They must be cared fo...
